Network-modifying ions in glass
Article Abstract:
Data from a computer-simulated model of network-modifying glasses and non-bridging oxygens could be interpreted to mean that about one such non-bridging oxygen is in the nearest-neighbor coordination shell of the M+ ions. The suggestion that the results are evidence for the microsegregation of the ions and the high-coordination of the oxygens is not necessarily the simplest or the most probable explanation. In fact, the partial radial distribution function indicates that cation-cation correlations provide a preferable model.

Three distinct and sequential steps in the release of sodium ions by the Na+/K+-ATPase
Article Abstract:
The NA+/K+ pump is a P-type ion-motive ATPase, and if deprived of potassium ions it is restricted to sodium translocation steps. The rate of electrogenic reactions are altered by changes in membrane potential, shifting the distribution of enzyme conformations. High-speed voltage jumps were used to initiate such redistributions, and the resulting pre-steady-state charge movements were found to relax in three identifiable stages.

Ion permeation through the [Na.sup.}, [K.sup.} -ATPase
Article Abstract:
The ion pathway through the [Na.sup.}, [K.sup.} -ATPase, a representative P-type pump, is examined after uncoupling its extra- and intracellular gates with the marine toxin palytoxin. The distinct influences of differently charged reagents reveal that a wide outer vestibule penetrates deep into the [Na.sup.}, [K.sup.} -ATPase, where the pathway narrows and leads to a charge-selectivity filter.
